The same shall be observed as critical themes during academic events such as conferences, seminars, etc., and also in extra-curricular events, extension and outreach activities of the institute.
DME under its Green Campus Initiatives adopts an eco-friendly activity each year in order to keep up its commitment as per the Green Policy. Over years, DME has adopted various green initiatives like gifting tree planters instead of any gift to dignitaries, usage of Collpoll ERP in order to go paperless and also at various occasions the faculties are gifted DME Mugs & Bottles and jute bags to promote awareness about environment.
Adoption of DME Mugs & Bottles
Single-use, disposable plastic bottles may cause chemical contamination and toxicity to the drinking water. Exposure to sunlight and heat can cause the release of toxic chemicals from the plastic into the water. That means leaving water bottles in open spaces could heat them, and the water may be unsafe for drinking. Apart from the impact on health, these Plastic bottles contribute a major part of plastic waste generated daily, causing plastic pollution and other environmental issues. The disposable single-use plastic water bottles & cups end up in landfills and water bodies, where they affect the ecosystem and cause a threat to the survival of many species. Plastic waste is harmful to living creatures due to the release of chemicals contaminating the air, soil, and water. It is a proven fact that whether it is land, sea, or air, the dangers of plastic water bottles concern the environment and human society. Thus, under its green initiatives pledge, DME adopted the pledge to switch to DME Thermosteel Mugs, Sippers & Bottles. All DME faculty members upon joining the institute are given a gift package including DME Thermosteel Mugs, Sippers & Bottles, to ensure an absolute ban on the usage of pet bottles & plastic cups.
Adoption of Paper Bag for Gifting
Plastic bags are difficult and costly to recycle and most end up on landfill sites where they take around 300 years to photodegrade. They break down into tiny toxic particles that contaminate the soil and waterways and enter the food chain when animals accidentally ingest them. Shiny and glitter-encrusted wrapping papers are also very harmful to the environment as they cannot be recycled and contain micro plastics. The glitter pollutes oceans and ends up being ingested by animals and thus, harms the environment. Therefore, under the Green Initiative Pledge, DME switched to using DME Paper Bag for all kinds of corporate gifting and made a shift from wrapping paper or plastic bags etc. This small yet impactful effort of DME contributes to the long goal of preserving and protecting the environment.
Installation of Green & Blue Dustbins for Wet and Dry Sorting
There are different kinds of waste such as solid waste, glass waste, biological waste, etc. So these wastes are dumped in separate colored waste bins. Blue and Green Dustbins are used to segregate two different kinds of waste, Green one is for wet waste and the blue colored dustbin is for dry waste. In municipalities, Blue colored bins are used for collecting materials that are recyclable. The recyclable materials include paper- newspaper, magazines, etc., cardboard, food tins, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, tetra pack packaging, etc. The green bins are used for collecting kitchen and other plant or animal wastes. DME also uses this method of segregating waste. This is managed by the supporting Housekeeping staff, who help in maintaining cleanliness throughout the campus. These dustbins have been installed on every floor near the washroom, near the canteen area and other relevant places.
No Email Printing Policy
Green footers are sections added to the bottom of your email, usually as part of your email signature. Green footers are usually a few short lines of green colour text that ask the recipient to conserve paper and avoid printing out the email or documents altogether. Every day, people hit the print button without really considering why. Often it’s because we’re used to seeing things on paper. Reduce printing and you directly reduce the impact of all three on your environmental footprint. Thus, when the entire world was running Online due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, DME under its Green Initiatives Pledge adopted a No Email Print Policy, whereby it requested faculties to attach a declaration under their emails about avoiding taking email printouts to create environmental consciousness. Many faculties follow this practice and it has significantly created an impact.
Installation of LED Lights
Swapping out fluorescent lighting for brighter LEDs in institutes is beneficial in many ways. Classroom LED lights are a great way to lower energy costs and improve focus among students and faculty. Educational institutions that take advantage of LED classroom lighting typically see a substantial decrease in energy costs. LEDs consume less electricity than fluorescent lights, lowering energy consumption and monthly electric bills. On top of saving money, LED classroom lights can improve focus and concentration among students and faculty. LED lighting is more adjustable, meaning it can switch freely between white and blue light to enhance productivity. Proper lighting can help students strain their eyes less during the day to absorb information better during class. Additionally, LED lighting helps reduce hyperactivity among children and improves reading speed over time. Therefore, DME made the entire campus LED-friendly by installing LED lights in classrooms, faculty rooms, corridors, etc. This was a significant step taken under the Green Initiative Pledge.
Vehicle Free Campus
Vehicular pollution results in the emission of greenhouse poisonous gases into the atmosphere, which will result in causing damage to the ozone layer and increase atmospheric temperature, leading to global warming. Due to global warming, even animals and other living creatures on earth are being affected. DME under its commitment to keep the environment pollution free, made the campus vehicle free. This step ensured that there is a total ban on all students from getting their vehicles inside campus to cut down air pollution and noise pollution. For the same, Turnstile was set up at the main college entrance to ensure all students vehicles are curtailed outside.
Sustainable Fabric – Jute Bag Usage by Employees
Jute is 100% biodegradable (it degrades biologically in 1 to 2 years), low-energy recyclable, and can even be used as compost for the garden. It is clear in terms of reusability and recyclability that jute bags are one of the best options available nowadays. They are durable and long lasting, and do not tear easily like Plastic and Paper bags do. Jute bags are reusable and therefore environmentally friendly. Therefore, under green initiatives pledge, DME adopted the pledge to gift Jute Bags to DME Faculties to initiate the use of Jute Sustainable Fabric on occasion of Diwali, as a memento of being a part of DME Family. All faculties found this as not only a great gift for Diwali but also a very useful one and appreciated it a lot.
To keep up its commitment under the green initiatives pledge, DME became a robust ICT-enabled digital campus in the year 2019, long before the pandemic. It was a visionary decision to make the learning process student-centric thereby enhancing the student experience. Every student gets an individual email id on the DME G-suite domain, ERP login Id, and Turnitin Login id for the entire duration of their course at DME. Implementation of academic ERP with Turnitin integration was done to reduce the response time and enable swift transmission of paperless content. This helps in making the campus environment-friendly. Faculty conducts online MCQ tests after every unit completion. E-Course pack is provided in all subjects which are uploaded on the ERP and available for students to study anywhere anytime.
With the growth of human population and the increasing urbanization of the natural environment, global environment issues have caused shifts in trends related to the various aspects of society, gifting being the most prominent of them. Focusing more on maintaining the environmental health and the delicate ecological balance, the idea of presenting environmentally-friendly green gifts have been highly beneficial to the global ecological landscape. Therefore, under green initiatives pledge, DME adopted the pledge to gift a Green Plant/ Sapling to guests as a memento, both for in campus & outside campus events, irrespective of the dignitary. This initiative has been widely appreciated by all guests and dignitaries.
DME Eco Club conducts activities and events by giving challenges to students, changing their approach towards sustainability by ensuring participation in clean up drives, awareness campaigns etc. The students are also made aware about the importance of environment and are sensitized about the important role that we can play in preserving environment and nature.

Online celebration of World Environment day (05.06.2020)
The environment is the entire universe and the living world, it not only includes humans beings but also all animals, trees, plants, natural vegetation etc.
A clean environment is very important to live a peaceful and healthy life but our environment is getting destroyed day by day.
World environment day is celebrated on June 5 every year and this day is commemorated to raise awareness about environmental issues, the increasingly deteriorating conditions, climate change etc. This day acts as a reminder to people to be more considerate and aware of the Earth’s existing conditions, in terms of the environment.
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. On World Environment Day, people take action to spread awareness about the environment and motivate others to do the same, hoping to create a better future. As our society modernizes, our environment gets affected due to the adoption of technologies and resources that are quite harmful to the environment. People have a long way to go, in terms of advocating biodegradable resources and adopting the same. Therefore, to keep up this commitment, DME Eco Club students celebrated World Environment Online due to the pandemic on 05.06.2020, through online meeting.
Saving Electricity and Water Drive (17.01.2020)
Water conservation has become essential in every part of the world, even in regions where water appears to be enough. It is the most practical and environment-friendly approach to lessen our need for water. Similarly, In our homes, we rely on electricity to power our lights, appliances, and electronics. Many of us also use electricity to provide our homes with hot water, heat, and air conditioning. As we use more electricity in our homes, our electric bills rise. Thus, to educate peers on this, the students members of DME Eco Club, on 17.01.2020 organised a “Save Electricity & Water Drive”. This was run throughout the campus, whereby the students pasted stickers near switch boards and water coolers, washroom taps and informed other students to switch off lights when not in use and close unnecessarily running taps.

Screening of documentary film on ‘Drowning in Plastic’ (03.09.2019)
For the Professional Skill Development Activity, the report of which are annexed herewith, the students were shown a documentary on the effects of Plastic Pollution, “India: Drowning in Plastic” wherein Founder’s Valley showcases the experience of German entrepreneur Fridtjof Detzner who is on his journey to India – a country described in the documentary as one which is “drowning in plastic waste”. In the abovementioned documentary, Fridtjof Detzner meets certain entrepreneurs involved in production of eco-friendly substitutes to plastic and who want to tackle the country’s pollution crisis and fight for a cleaner India. The documentary captures his perspective on the issue and shows how grim the situation is and attempts to evoke in us a sense of responsibility towards environment, the need to shun away the consumerist ‘use and throw’ culture which has become our lifestyle, thus aggravating the problem of rapid acceleration in waste generation, at a pace much higher than the assimilative or absorptive capacity of our environment.
This activity was held in collaboration with the Centre for Enviro-legal Studies, DME. On 3rd September, 2019, the Centre for Enviro-legal Studies (CELS) screened the documentary film on plastic pollution titled “Drowning in Plastics” at Nelson Mandela Auditorium, DME. The same was attended by the batch of B.A. LL.B. as well as B.B.A. LL.B. (2017-2022), as a part of their PSDA. The screening of the documentary was followed by an interactive session conducted by some of the students of DME (final year batch) wherein the students through the means of a Power Point presentation (PPT) explained the core issues relating to the environmental hazard posed by the increased use of plastic ever since the discovery of the synthetic polymer. After having watched the documentary, the students were supposed to submit a short review of the documentary commenting upon the menace of Plastic Pollution, identifying the challenges pertaining to the use of plastic and exploring measures to curb the devastating problem. Through this exercise the students were asked to identify the issues highlighted in the documentary pertaining to the problem of ‘Plastic Pollution’, the causes for the same and the possible remedial measures which should be adopted to deal with the menace of plastic pollution.
The ill-effects of the excessive use of plastic, especially single use plastic, are well known. Be it our food packaging, disposable cups or straws, tonnes and tonnes of plastic waste is being generated every minute and piles of this non-biodegradable trash often ends up in the garbage dumps which is frequented by the stray animals and the same waste is ingested by these animals leading to severe health complications for them and even death. With there being proposals to ban ‘single use’ plastic all over the country, it is pertinent that the issue is taken up for analysis and effective substitutes to plastic, which is considered to be a ‘necessary evil’ because of the attributes of utility and convenience attached to it, are found. This activity was an initiative in the same direction so that habits discouraging use of plastic and encouraging the use of its substitutes, are promoted among all and to involve the students in creating awareness about the same. Reports submitted by the students reflected the same concerns as explained above. Copies of some of these reports are attached with this document.
